It was June 30th of 2016 around 9:45pm when I decided to leap out of bed, drive to the closest Target before they closed at 10pm to grab the only plastic squeeze bottles they offered with a box of Aunt Jemima’s pancake mix. After getting back from the store I decided to use the adrenaline I had to create my first pancake ever, a Pikachu Pokemon. When I was done around 1.5 hours later I decided to send a picture to my mom of my pancake art to which she responded “don’t quit your day job.” It’s been about 7 years and I am proud to say I quit my day job to become a full time pancake artist between years 3-4. For the first 1.5-2 years… I can honestly say I sucked haha I doodled any opportunity I had during work, practiced every night after work and had to make the hard choice to chose to learn how to draw while doing pancake art even when it wasn’t easy. As we all know humans have the ability to learn any skill in the world with enough practice and after 2 years of practice, I was lucky enough to partner with my friend Kenisha’s non-profit for their 1 year anniversary. That event changed everything for us here at Get Caked LA. The feeling I get from being able to share pancake art with you all and hopefully inspire humans to pursue their own dreams regardless of their experience level is what drives the heart of this business. A Stockton Native, she spent her early years of childhood sneaking out of daycare at Pacific Bowl, celebrating birthdays at Hammer Skate, and exploring neighborhoods by bike (or scooter) with her sister. Upon graduation day, Alexus relocated to Hawai’i in 2013 where she would pursue an education in psychology and sociology. Although this direction demonstrated to not be right for her at the time, her journey would later reveal strengths and values within herself that would serve as a catalyst for her new path. Prior to relocating to Los Angeles, she worked in a number of sales jobs, customer service, event planning, and even some interviewing on a local Stockton podcast. Alexus joined Get Caked in 2018 after she fell in love with her high school crush and long time bestie, Jasmine. Feeling immediately inspired and compelled to tell Jasmine’s story, she would go on to learn everything she could about marketing and social media. In elementary school, he and a friend sold hand made comics on the playground, but their entrepreneurial aspirations were shut down because you can’t just “break into the teacher’s lounge and use their printer paper and ink.” As Jack grew up he found that no one could stop his love for drawing and in middle school, he and a friend collaborated on an unpublished comic series that didn’t go anywhere, but would serve as the basis for a future web comic. When Jack reached high school, he eventually began making comic strips for the school newspaper while being involved in school plays and the community theatre. After finding that special magic through acting, Jack believed it was time to pursue his dream and move to Hollywood, CA all the way from Galveston, TX. After arriving in Hollywood, going to acting school, he realized his true passion was to become an illustrator. Thus Jack began his new path of becoming the best illustrator he could be. While in Los Angeles Jack has accomplished the creation of his ongoing web comic “Mr. Fez” based on characters he and his friend created in middle school together. He has collaborated with friends to create and developed a board game, Cohorts and Cronies, a game with over 600 cards with each one having it’s own unique graphics hand designed by Jack. Finally, he joined the Get Caked providing him with a new, fun, and very unique creative outlet. I grew up with a big family in Canonsburg, PA and always found myself doing something creative. I would make up my own stories, then create drawings or paintings to go with them. Finally, when I was 14, I discovered theatre and fell in love instantly. There’s something special about working incredibly hard just to put yourself out there. You never truly know how a performance will go, and there’s so much thrill in that. The thrill of performance has been my fuel. I moved to New York to study and eventually transitioned to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor. To this day, acting is my main focus and over time has grown to give me the ability to create my own short films! However, there’s no reason to limit yourself, especially when the ‘creative iron’ is hot. Some great friends and I were inspired to make a board game. We pushed ourselves to learn new skills to showcase our creativity in a different way and it worked. Our game has been circulating at board game conventions since the beginning of 2019. That brings us to Get Caked. I met the owner Jasmine right before her love of pancake art was sparked. I’ve been lucky enough to watch the evolution of doodles on a page to a full blown company. In December of 2018, she gave me an offer to learn another new creative skill by asking me to join the team. To my delight, pancake art combines so many of my previous interests. With Get Caked I get to mix the imaginations of our customers onto a griddle for their own enjoyment. All while receiving the performance thrill I crave.
